The article is devoted to the main problems faced by students of philology in study English lexicology. In university course lexicology considered as a branch linguistics that has its own goals and methods research, tasks systematic description vocabulary according origin, development current use. paper emphasizes importance studying higher education institution, because knowledge lexical units basis for formation communicative competence mastering foreign language general. plays an important role all types speech activity (reading, speaking, writing listening). A sufficient number programs textbooks on served material article. After analyzing research material, we can identify thematic blocks are traditionally studied institution: word formation, semasiology etymology word. distinction between "morpheme" - "allomorph" "morph", recognizing different affixes, which promotes better understanding texts ability speak succinctly orally writing, defining ways formation. block "Semasiology" most problematic issues meaning word, well synonymy polysemy, due large new meanings words appear language. Studying "Etymology word", including classification native borrowed vocabulary, presence such concepts etymological doublets, triplets hybrids, etc., will allow not only distinguish lexemes from ones, but it also show them richness language, development, dynamics improvement, cultivate respect history people.
